Dance for Health

At Citymoves, dance is for everyone. We encourage dance participation for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds and promote the physical, mental, and social benefits of dance.
Our Dance for Health Programmes currently encompass our Dance for Parkinson's Classes on Tuesdays, our new Dance for Dementia programme that brings classes into care homes and our ongoing partnership with Healing Arts Scotland.
If you would like to join or support one of our Dance for Health Programmes, please email Lynn Shaw, lynn.shaw@citymoves.org.uk

Dance for Health Programmes
Citymoves is delighted to host a weekly Tuesday class designed especially for people living with Parkinson’s, their families and carers. These classes are suitable for people with no dance experience and will develop confidence and creativity, whilst addressing Parkinson’s specific concerns such as: balance, flexibility, coordination, gait and social isolation.
Citymoves has recently developed a Dance for Dementia Programme delivered in local care homes. The movement and dance sessions are created to support people living with dementia, their families and carers. Classes are led by our highly-trained Dance for Health tutors and musicians who provide live accompaniment. Dance intervention is an excellent form of physical activity and a non-pharmacological method to provide effective management and treatment of dementia while supporting communication, expression, coordination, creativity and social interaction.

Citymoves was thrilled to be a part of Healing Arts Scotland 2024, a country-wide week-long activation celebrating and advocating for improved physical, mental and social health through the arts. Spearheaded by Scottish Ballet as part of the Jameel Arts & Health Lab’s global ‘Healing Arts’ campaign in collaboration with the World Health Organisation, the one-week activation event was produced together with a national coalition of organisations across culture, science, health, education and government.

Help us deliver our world-class Dance for Health Programmes to people with additional support needs and profound health conditions, by giving to our Dance for Health programme.
We are looking for partners to fund classes in care homes, support tutor training to allow us to expand our programmes to better support people with other life limiting conditions, and to support creating fully accessible dance experiences for people with mobility concerns and additional support needs.
